- Biden announced Putin's promise not to deploy nuclear weapons in Ukraine and not to admit it to NATO yet
The United States has promised Russian President Vladimir Putin not to deploy nuclear weapons in Ukraine and not to admit it to NATO in the near future. This was stated by incumbent US President Joe Biden in an interview with the MSNBC TV channel on January 17.
Answering the host's question about whether he had a conversation with Putin at the beginning of the special operation in Ukraine, the incumbent US president answered in the affirmative. At the same time, he did not specify when exactly his conversation with the Russian leader took place.
"I said that <...> we have already removed nuclear weapons from there (from Ukraine. - Ed.). It is not there. We are not going to bring it back, and it (Ukraine. - Ed.) will not become part of NATO until it changes its system to a large extent," Biden said. The TV channel broadcast the interview on YouTube.
Earlier, on January 13, the current U.S. president admitted that the states have created a threat of nuclear confrontation with Russia with their support for Ukraine.
On December 10 last year, The National Interest magazine reported that NATO could deploy B-61 nuclear bombs in Poland or Ukraine in response to Russia's use of the Oreshnik medium-range ballistic missile.
On November 25, US Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Green, commenting on media reports that the administration of incumbent President Joe Biden was seriously considering transferring nuclear weapons to Ukraine, called it a crazy idea.
Kiev has repeatedly said that Ukraine considers NATO membership the only possible security guarantee for the country. In response, the Kremlin's official representative, Dmitriy Peskov, said that Ukraine's joining the alliance was unacceptable for Russia because it was a threat. For his part, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte pointed out that the bloc was not discussing Kiev's invitation and was negotiating only on arms supplies.
Ukraine applied to join NATO on an accelerated basis on September 30, 2022. At the time, Zelenskyy said that in fact the country was already in the alliance and met its standards.
