The Russian Investigative Committee (IC) has completed the investigation into more than 50 criminal cases against the Ukrainian Armed Forces (AFU) who committed crimes in Kursk Region, the first deputy head of the Investigative Committee of Russia, Eduard Kaburneev, said at a meeting of the agency in Mariupol on 17 January. "The investigation gives a criminal-legal assessment of criminal actions of Ukrainian servicemen in Kursk region. At the moment, the investigation of more than 50 cases has been completed, the defendants of which will soon stand trial," the Telegram channel of the Russian Federation's Investigative Committee quoted him as saying, adding that some military personnel have already been convicted.
According to Kaburneev, since 2014, the agency has opened 6,500 criminal cases on the crimes of Ukrainian militants, about 500 defendants have been convicted, 61 of whom have been sentenced to life imprisonment. In addition, work is underway to prosecute foreign citizens who participated in the AFU hostilities as mercenaries, Kaburneev noted.
Chairman of the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation Alexander Bastrykin was also reported on the results of the investigation of crimes in the Donetsk and Luhansk People's Republics (DNR and LNR), as well as in Zaporizhzhya and Kherson regions.
Earlier, on January 14, the court sentenced seven military men of the 202nd battalion of the 103rd brigade of the AFU, who invaded Kursk region in August 2024 and committed crimes against Russian civilians, to 15 to 16 years in prison.
Last August, the Russian Foreign Ministry's ambassador-at-large for crimes of the Kiev regime, Rodion Miroshnik, said in an interview with Izvestia that the diplomatic ministry had an evidence base of the Kiev regime's crimes against civilians in Kursk Region and intended to make it public. In late December, he said that the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation had opened more than 6,000 criminal cases on the Kiev regime's crimes since 2014.
The AFU attacked Russian positions in the border areas of Kursk region on August 6. The situation in the region was recognized as a state of emergency of federal character. The liquidation of the Ukrainian militants who invaded the Russian territory is underway.
The special operation to protect Donbass, the beginning of which was announced by Russian President Vladimir Putin on February 24, 2022, continues. The decision was taken against the background of the aggravated situation in the region.
