Pezeshkian was met in Moscow by Russian Energy Minister Sergei Tsivilev, Deputy Foreign Minister Andrei Rudenko and head of the Russian Foreign Ministry's State Protocol Department Igor Bogdashev.
On the eve, the Kremlin press service reported that Russian leader Vladimir Putin and his Iranian counterpart will sign the Treaty on Strategic Partnership between Russia and Iran on January 17, which reflects the entry of bilateral relations to a new level. In addition, the treaty fixes a legal framework for further development of Russian-Iranian ties in all areas for the long-term perspective.
During the talks, Putin and Pezeshkian may discuss the situation in Syria, the Palestinian-Israeli conflict zone and the situation in the Transcaucasus, as well as the topic of Iran's nuclear program.
Iranian Ambassador to Russia Kazem Jalali said on January 14 that this agreement is concluded for a period of 20 years. In addition, a day earlier, the diplomat said that the agreement contains 47 articles and covers all spheres of bilateral cooperation. In preparing the document, most attention was paid to balance, respect for the territorial integrity of states and the principles of sovereignty.
At the same time, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi clarified on January 15 that the treaty on comprehensive partnership between Russia and the Islamic Republic does not include the creation of a military alliance between the two countries, although there are provisions on security and defense.
