Ovechkin cut Gretzky's lead to 20 goals against the Ottawa Senators

Russian forward and captain of the Washington Capitals hockey club Alexander Ovechkin scored a puck in overtime of the regular season National Hockey League (NHL) match against the Ottawa Senators, thereby reducing the gap between Canadian Wayne Gretzky and 20 goals.

Ovechkin's puck was the only one of the game. It helped Washington win the away game. The goal was the 27th for the hockey player in overtime of the regular NHL championship. Ovechkin leads the league in this indicator.

He is second in the list of the best snipers in the history of the NHL. Now the total number of his goals in championships is 874.

At the end of the match, "Washington" is in first place in the Eastern Conference with 65 points in 45 games. "New York Rangers" occupy the ninth line of the conference standings.

Earlier, on January 12, Ovechkin scored his 873rd puck in the match against the Minnesota Wild and cut the gap to Wayne Gretzky to 21 goals. The puck was thrown into an empty net in the 19th minute of the third period. The match ended with a score of 4:1 in favor of the Washington Capitals.

Before that, January 10, on the main page of the NHL website placed a counter with the number of goals that Ovechkin has left to score in the regular season to beat Gretzky's record.
