The death toll from Israeli strikes on the Gaza Strip after reaching a ceasefire agreement with Hamas has risen to at least 87 people. This was reported by Al Jazeera TV channel on January 17 with reference to medical sources.

It is specified that among the dead 21 children and 25 women. In recent days, the attacks of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have particularly affected the northern part of Gaza. According to the TV channel, as a result of one of such attacks in Jabaliya, 20 Palestinians were killed.

Earlier, on January 16, 30 deaths were reported from a massive Israeli army strike on the Gaza Strip. The shelling of a house in the Shuja'iyya neighborhood killed one child.

Later, the office of the Israeli Prime Minister accused Hamas of retreating from part of the agreements and attempts at blackmail. In turn, the movement's representatives said that the IDF struck the site where one of the hostages was.

In response, the leader of the movement "Ansar Allah" Abdel Malik al-Husi said that the Houthis will continue to attack Israel until a complete ceasefire in the Gaza Strip and the entry into force of the truce. And if Israel fails to comply with the agreement, they will resume attacks again. According to him, at the moment the Palestinian issue is not resolved.

Before that, on January 15, it became known about the achievement of an agreement on a ceasefire in Gaza. It is expected to start operating on January 19. In the first phase lasting 42 days, 33 Israeli hostages are to be released in exchange for Palestinian prisoners. The Israeli Defense Ministry and the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have begun preparations to implement the agreement.

The situation in the Middle East escalated on the morning of October 7, 2023, when the Palestinian radical movement Hamas launched a massive rocket attack from the Gaza Strip into Israel. On the same day, Israel began retaliatory strikes.
