- The European Commission commented on the Russian Armed Forces strikes on the Ukrainian gas storage facility
The Russian Armed Forces' (AF) strikes on the Ukrainian gas storage facility were carried out "surgically". Anna-Kaisa Itkonen, a representative of the European Commission, said on January 16.
"There is no doubt that the Ukrainian energy system is under incredible pressure as a result of constant surgical strikes by the Russian army," TASS quoted her as saying.
In addition, according to Itkonen, European countries will continue to support Ukraine.
Earlier in the day, the Russian Defense Ministry said that the Russian military had successfully hit the ground infrastructure of the largest underground gas storage facility in Stryi, Lviv region. It was specified that the Russian Armed Forces struck important gas and energy infrastructure facilities in Ukraine in response to ATACMS strikes and an attempt to disrupt gas supply via Turkish Stream.
Russian forces began striking military facilities and related energy and communications facilities in Ukraine in October 2022. As Russian President Vladimir Putin explained, this was in response to terrorist actions by the Kiev regime.
The special operation to protect Donbass, the start of which was announced on February 24, 2022, is ongoing. The decision was taken against the background of the aggravated situation in the region.
