Putin signed a decree on holding the Year of Defender of the Fatherland in 2025
Russian President Vladimir Putin has signed a decree on holding the Year of the Defender of the Fatherland in 2025. The document was posted on the official Internet portal of legal information on January 16.
According to the decree, it is decided to hold the Year of the Defender of the Fatherland in Russia in order to preserve historical memory, to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the victory in the Great Patriotic War (WWII), as well as in gratitude to veterans and recognizing the feat of the participants of the Special Military Operation (SMO).
It is specified that the administration of the head of state should form an organizing committee to hold the Year of the Defender of the Fatherland, as well as approve its composition. Head of the presidential administration Anton Vaino has been appointed chairman of the organizing committee.
Among other things, it is instructed to form a directorate, to ensure the development and approval of the plan of the main events, including the amount of their financing. The top officials of the subjects of Russia are also recommended to carry out the necessary activities within the framework of the Year of the Defender of the Fatherland.
In late December 2024, Putin declared 2025 the Year of the Defender of the Fatherland. The decision was made in honor of the participants of the special military operation and in memory of the exploits of all ancestors. At the same time, he called for promoting as a global value the victory over Nazism in 1945.
In 2025, May 9 marks the 80th anniversary of the victory in the Great Patriotic War. In January 1945, the USSR army launched an offensive on Berlin. At the end of hostilities at 00:43 Moscow time on May 9, the commanders-in-chief signed the act of unconditional surrender of Germany, which served as the end of the Great Patriotic War.
