Last year's Australian Open finalist Daniil Medvedev lost in the second round of the tournament to the 121st-ranked player from the United States, Lener Thien. The meeting took place on Thursday, January 16.
The Russian was seeded number five at the tournament, while the American qualified for the main draw by winning the qualification round. The meeting ended with the score 6:3, 7:6 (7:4), 6:7 (8:10), 1:6, 7:6 (10:7) in favor of the tennis player from the United States. In the course of the meeting, the athlete from Russia received a warning for an altercation with a spectator. Medvedev for the first time since 2018 failed to reach the third round of a Grand Slam tournament, which is held on the hard surface.
In turn, the American will face Frenchman Corentin Moutet in the next round of the competition.
Earlier, on January 14, Medvedev broke his racket on the net during the first round match and damaged his camera. During the third set, Medvedev was losing to his Thai opponent Kasidit Samray 3-5.
