A student suspected of a knife attack in a gymnasium in Slovakia, which resulted in the death of two people, has been detained. This was reported on January 16 by the TV channel TA3, citing police data.

"An 18-year-old student suspected of committing a serious crime in Spišská Stara Ves was detained shortly after the incident," the media outlet points out.

The country's police said law enforcers are taking all measures to ensure safety. The head of the Interior Ministry of Slovakia, Matus Szutaj Eštok, commenting on the tragic incident, expressed condolences to the families of the victims and words of support to the survivors of the accident.

"I condemn the attack by a student who stabbed a teacher and his classmates in the gymnasium," the TV channel quotes him as saying.

Earlier on January 16, it was reported that the student committed a knife attack in the gymnasium in the town of Spišská Stara Ves in the east of Slovakia, killed at least two people. It was specified that one victim is in critical condition, there are other injured. Preliminarily, the attack targeted two students and a teacher. The police reported that the attacker young man fled after committing the crime.
