Kremlin says Russia ready to assist Transnistria in gas sector
Russia is ready to assist Transnistria in dealing with the gas crisis. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said this on January 16.
"Moscow will be ready and willing to provide assistance to Transnistria," he said at a briefing.
At the same time, Peskov stressed that Chisinau should ensure the conclusion of relevant contracts, as well as offer certain logistical solutions for the implementation of supplies.
"Here so far we have not heard any statements about readiness to do this," the Kremlin official noted.
The fact that Russia will send humanitarian gas supplies to Transnistria amid the energy crisis was announced by the president of the unrecognized Transnistrian Moldovan Republic (TMR), Vadim Krasnoselsky, at a briefing on January 15.
Since January 1, 2025, Gazprom has stopped supplying fuel to Europe through the Ukrainian gas transportation system. The state corporation noted that this happened due to Ukraine's refusal to prolong the agreements.
An economic state of emergency has been in effect in Transnistria since December 9, 2024. In early January, it was reported that 1.5 thousand multi-storey and 72 thousand private houses were left without heat and gas.
On January 8, the first deputy government and DMR minister of economic development, Serhiy Obolonik, said that Transnistria was in a state of not only energy but also humanitarian crisis.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky (whose term of office expired on May 20, 2024) said back in August 2024 that Kiev would not extend the gas transit agreement with Russia. For his part, Russian leader Vladimir Putin pointed out that Moscow was not giving up gas supplies through Ukrainian territory.
