Three-time Olympic swimming medalist Dmitry Volkov died

Three-time Olympic medalist in swimming in the USSR national team Dmitry Volkov died at the age of 58. This was reported on January 16 by Olympic champion and journalist Elena Vaitsekhovskaya.

"This morning Dima Volkov died. Many times I tried to call him in the last two weeks, but failed. I know, in the same way failed to friends - they were in touch with them," she wrote in her Telegram-channel.

Vaitsekhovskaya specified that the athlete's funeral will be held on the night of January 19 in the Church of Peter and Paul on Soldier Street.

The Russian Aquatics Federation told TASS that Volkov had been battling cancer for a long time.

Dmitry Volkov was a four-time European champion and silver medalist at the 1991 World Championships. He also won a silver medal at the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona and two bronze medals at the 1988 Seoul Games. The athlete was awarded the title of Honored Master of Sports of the USSR and was also awarded medals "For Labor Valor" and "For Labor Distinction".
