The AFU lost more than 210 soldiers on the Kursk direction over the day

The Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) lost more than 210 servicemen and two infantry fighting vehicles (IFVs) during the fighting in the Kursk region. This was reported by the Russian Defense Ministry on January 16.

"Over the day, the AFU losses amounted to more than 210 servicemen, two infantry fighting vehicles, an armored fighting vehicle, six vehicles, a US-made M777 howitzer and eight mortars were destroyed," the ministry said in a statement.

In total, during the fighting in the border areas of the Kursk region, the Ukrainian army lost more than 52,300 military personnel, 1,567 armored combat vehicles (ACVs), 305 tanks, 231 BMPs, 170 armored personnel carriers (APCs), 16 launchers of anti-aircraft missile systems (SAMs) and a large amount of other equipment, including those manufactured in Western countries.

Earlier in the day, the Russian Defense Ministry reported that an army aviation crew on a Mi-28NM helicopter disrupted the rotation of AFU units in the Kursk direction. This combat task was carried out as part of the support of ground troops, destroyed armored vehicles and enemy manpower.

The day before, on January 15, the military reconnaissance unit of the "North" group of troops in the Kursk border area discovered an AFU tank camouflaged in a wooded area. The enemy armored vehicle was hit with a Lancet barrage munition, and the target was successfully destroyed.

Ukraine 's armed forces attacked Russian positions in the border areas of Kursk Region on August 6. The situation in the region was recognized as a federal emergency. The liquidation of Ukrainian militants who invaded the Russian territory is underway.

The special operation to protect Donbass, the beginning of which was announced by Russian President Vladimir Putin on February 24, 2022, continues. The decision was taken against the background of the aggravated situation in the region.
