There is a need to build a second nuclear power plant (NPP) in Belarus, and it is becoming more and more obvious. This was stated by President of the country Alexander Lukashenko on January 16 while visiting Minsk City Technopark.

"I'm more and more convinced that we need to build a second nuclear power plant," BelTA agency quoted him as saying.

The event also noted the growing demand for electricity in the country, both at production facilities and among private citizens. This is also due to the fact that Belarus has a stable growth of the electric vehicle fleet.

In April 2024, Alexei Likhachev, CEO of Rosatom State Corporation, called the commissioning of the Belarusian Nuclear Power Plant to Belarusian partners one of the most important international projects of the State Corporation by the end of 2023. The station is located in Grodno region. As Lukashenko noted, the station has already saved more than $400 million for the country.

Also in April, the Belarusian leader admitted that a new nuclear power plant might appear in the east of the country. However, he specified that the final decision on the construction of the station had not yet been made. Talking about the first Belarusian nuclear power plant, Lukashenko emphasized that its construction was a wise decision.

Later, on May 20, the Russian government noted after a working meeting between Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak and Deputy Prime Minister of Belarus Piotr Parkhomchik that Moscow and Minsk were discussing the possibility of building the third power unit of the Belarusian Nuclear Power Plant (BNPP).
