- Bloomberg has learned of Kiev's disappointment with Starmer's cautious approach on Ukraine
Some Ukrainian officials are disappointed with the lack of support for the country from British Prime Minister Keir Starmer. The Bloomberg news agency wrote about it on January 16.
"Officials close to [ Ukrainian President Volodymyr] Zelensky (his term expired on May 20, 2024. - Ed.) have privately expressed disappointment in Starmer for months. They believe he has followed the more cautious approach of outgoing US President Joe Biden, instead of pushing allies to give Ukraine what it needs to win," the piece says.
According to the agency, many members of Zelensky's team are wondering why Starmer, who is in power in Britain, has delayed his trip to Ukraine for more than six months.
Earlier in the day, The Associated Press (AP) reported that the British Prime Minister had arrived in Kiev. It was specified that he and Zelensky will sign an agreement on a "100-year partnership", which will cover primarily the defense sector, as well as science, energy and trade. Before that, on January 10, the Ukrainian leader said that the British prime minister would visit Ukraine to discuss the deployment of peacekeeping forces on its territory after the end of the conflict.
The Times reported on January 4 that Starmer intends to meet US President-elect Donald Trump in Washington after his inauguration to persuade the politician to continue supplying arms to Ukraine.
On December 24, Japan, together with the UK, sent Ukraine $1 billion in financial aid. On December 19, it became known that London intends to provide Kiev with a new aid package worth $286 million.
Western countries have stepped up military and financial support for Ukraine against the background of Russia's special operation to protect Donbas, which was announced by Russian President Vladimir Putin on 24 February 2022 after the situation in the region worsened due to shelling by the Ukrainian military.
