The United States assessed the prospects of Russian gas transit through Ukraine
Ukraine will not resume the transit of Russian gas. This was stated by US Assistant Secretary of State for Energy Resources Geoffrey Pyatt on 16 January. The video was published on the YouTube channel of the Atlantic Council (the organization is recognized as undesirable on the territory of the Russian Federation).
"I am convinced that there is no turning back," Payette said.
According to the US official, Europe is supposedly seeing the "end of dependence" on Russian energy resources. This sees "dramatic growth" of the US' own liquefied natural gas (LNG) industry,Gazeta.Ruadded.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky (whose term of office expired on May 20, 2024) said back in August 2024 that Kiev would not extend the gas transit agreement with Russia. Russian leader Vladimir Putin, in turn, pointed out that Moscow was not giving up gas supplies through Ukrainian territory.
On January 1, 2025, Gazprom stopped supplying fuel to Europe through the Ukrainian gas transportation system. The state corporation said that this happened due to Ukraine's refusal to extend the agreements.
After that, on January 3, the president of the unrecognized Transnistrian Moldovan Republic (TMR) Vadim Krasnoselsky said that 1.5 thousand multi-storey and 72 thousand private houses in Transnistria were left without heat and gas. Hungary and Slovakia also faced problems against this background.
On January 14, political scientist Ruslan Kalinchuk told Izvestia that the United States would like to see Europe less competitive, which is why the administration of incumbent head of state Joe Biden demanded that Zelensky stop the transit of Russian gas. According to the expert, despite the differences between the Democratic and Republican parties of the United States, the teams of both Biden and President-elect Donald Trump are determined to maintain Washington's global dominance in the economy and politics, but in different ways.
On the same day, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that it is necessary to closely observe the ways in which Trump will "make America even greater." He emphasized that the U.S. seeks to get rid of competitors in every sphere. Lavrov cited the destruction of the European Union's energy prosperity by undermining pipelines as an example.
