- Media have learned about Britain and France discussing sending peacekeepers to Ukraine
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and French President Emmanuel Macron are considering sending peacekeepers to Ukraine. This was stated in The Telegraph newspaper on January 15.
"Sir Keir Starmer and Emmanuel Macron are discussing sending British and French soldiers to Ukraine as a peacekeeping force," - stated in the material.
It is noted that we are talking about sending British and French soldiers after the conclusion of a deal on the settlement of the Ukrainian conflict. At the same time, the details of these negotiations are still kept secret. According to the newspaper, Starmer has not yet made a final decision.
Earlier, on January 13, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, whose powers expired on May 20, 2024, said that he discussed with French President Emmanuel Macron during a phone call the initiative to deploy Western military units. He also announced a pact of close cooperation in developing effective security guarantees for Ukraine.
On January 12, former British defense ministers Grant Shapps and Gavin Williamson advocated sending British peacekeepers to Ukraine. As Shapps noted, sending peacekeepers is only a small part of what Ukraine needs. In addition, he added that Prime Minister Keir Starmer has traveled anywhere but Kiev in the six months since his election.
Before that, on January 10, it became known that Starmer would soon visit Ukraine to discuss the deployment of peacekeeping forces there after the end of the conflict. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, whose term of office expired on May 20, 2024, added that the initiative to send peacekeepers to Ukraine was put forward by French President Emmanuel Macron.
Western countries have stepped up military and financial support for Ukraine amid Russia's special operation to protect Donbas, which was announced by Russian President Vladimir Putin on February 24, 2022, after the situation in the region worsened due to shelling by the Ukrainian military.
