- Bloomberg reported on the start of negotiations between Russia and Ukraine on the protection of nuclear facilities
Russia and Ukraine are holding limited talks in Qatar on protecting nuclear facilities from attacks. This was reported by Bloomberg agency on January 15, citing a source.
"Ukraine and Russia are holding limited talks in Qatar on rules to protect nuclear facilities from attacks," the article said.
However, as the agency notes, according to Ukrainian officials, the talks between Kiev and Moscow at the moment concern only the exchange of prisoners and the return of children to Ukrainian territory.
Earlier, on November 4, 2024, the head of the Ukrainian president's office, Andriy Yermak, said that Ukraine allowed negotiations with Russia on stopping strikes on energy facilities. According to him, Kiev is ready to conclude such an agreement with the mediation of Qatar.
On November 3, the Security Council called Yermak's statement about readiness for a peaceful settlement of the conflict an attempt to demonstrate to third countries "readiness for some process of possible settlement on some terms."
Prior to that, Die Zeit reported on Nov. 1 about non-public talks between Russia and Ukraine on mutual concessions, including the countries discussing refraining from strikes on energy infrastructure, prisoner exchange, the return of children, and a grain deal.
On 29 October, The Financial Times quoted a diplomat as saying that Russia and Ukraine were holding talks on mutual cessation of strikes on energy infrastructure. The newspaper's interlocutor noted that the sides were close to an agreement in August, but Kiev's invasion of Kursk Region crossed out all efforts. In turn, the Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov called the FT publication about negotiations with Kiev on the cessation of strikes a throw-in.
The special operation to protect Donbass, the start of which was announced by the Russian president on February 24, 2022, continues. The decision was taken against the backdrop of the worsening situation in the region.
