More than 50% of US residents polled opposed the idea of annexing Greenland
The majority of American residents oppose the idea of US President-elect Donald Trump to annex Greenland to the country. This follows from the data of a poll published on January 15 by the newspaper USA Today.
It is reported that the poll was conducted for four days, from January 7 to 11, and about 1 thousand people took part in it.
According to the poll, 53% of residents surveyed are against Trump's plans, 29% found the idea good but not realistic, 11% of respondents fully supported Trump's plan. The remaining 7% were undecided as to which position they were more in favor of.
On January 13, a poll published in Patriot Polling showed that more than half of Greenland's population is in favor of the island joining the United States. The survey was conducted from January 6 to January 11, with 416 Greenlanders participating. According to the results of the survey, 57.3% of respondents were in favor of joining the United States.
Earlier, on January 10, Greenlandic Prime Minister Muthe Bowrup Egede said that Greenland is part of the North American continent, the U.S. sees it as a kind of backyard where the entire continent will be protected.
On December 22, 2024, the U.S. leader-elect said that for the U.S. "ownership and control of Greenland is an absolute necessity," announcing the appointment of an ambassador to Denmark. The politician had previously expressed interest in buying Greenland from Denmark in 2019, but was turned down.
