Britain has complained about water pollution due to air force bases
UK Air Force bases have become a source of serious groundwater contamination with non-degradable chemicals. This was reported by The Guardian newspaper on January 15 with reference to the environmental project Watershed Investigations.
It is noted that concentrations of a group of hazardous substances in the area of groundwater near the Royal Air Force bases are extremely alarming and dozens of times higher than the permissible norm. They are known as "everlasting chemicals" because of their indestructible nature and cause cancer, fertility and thyroid problems in humans.
"The level of 'everlasting chemicals' in the groundwater in these areas is of great concern. If no action is taken, such as installing a reclamation system to clean up the groundwater and prevent off-site migration, the Department of Defense could be considered to be in violation of the Environmental Protection Act," geochemistry expert Cecilia MacLeod told the publication.
The publication notes that such a situation is observed throughout the kingdom.
Back in August 2024, Bloomberg agency called wastewater a new political problem in Europe. According to its data, it concerns not only the pollution of the Seine and the Thames, as many European cities have centuries-old infrastructure, which was not even cleaned from a large amount of domestic and industrial waste.
