The head of the Lithuanian Interior Ministry, Vladislav Kondratovic, suggested paying €3.16 million in compensation instead of accepting migrants under the EU quota. He voiced this idea on January 15 on the air of LRT.

"The safest thing for Lithuania, understandably, is to pay this money, but here we will talk to the Minister of Finance and see," RIA Novosti quoted him as saying.

According to the Minister, the funds would still have to be invested in measures to integrate migrants, so it is better "to pay another country that is ready to accept them."

Earlier, on October 21, 2024, the Estonian Police and Border Guard Department announced plans to install buoys with blades in the waters to prevent illegal crossing of the eastern border. The pilot project will run for three years.

Earlier the same month, it was reported that 14 of the 27 EU states signed a document calling on the European Commission to tighten rules on the return of illegal migrants to the association's countries. The letter was also signed by three non-EU countries that are members of the Schengen Agreement: Norway, Switzerland and Liechtenstein.
