Secretary of State candidate calls China 'major threat' to U.S.
The People's Republic of China (PRC) is the "main threat" to the United States. U.S. Secretary of State nominee Marco Rubio said this during a Senate hearing on January 15.
"The Chinese Communist Party, which governs the PRC, is the most powerful and dangerous rival the United States has ever faced," said Rubio, whose speech was carried by The New York Times.
He said China has something the Soviet Union "never had," namely technological, industrial and economic superiority. According to Rubio, Washington's competition with Beijing will determine the course of the 21st century.
He also touched on the issue of Taiwan. According to the candidate for US Secretary of State, the situation with Taiwan is a fundamental and defining issue for Chinese leader Xi Jinping.
On Jan. 5, the Financial Times wrote that Chinese leader Xi Jinping's strategy toward the Trump administration is defined by clarity and determination. Experts predict that it will consist of creating various measures and restrictions to hurt American companies, adaptation and expanding economic ties.
Earlier, on Jan. 4, the South China Morning Post (SCMP) reported that Sino-US relations under Trump's presidency could improve if he fulfills his "goodwill intentions."
Earlier on Dec. 21, China's Defense Ministry said the US military strategy is becoming increasingly confrontational and adventurous. It drew attention to Washington's use of military superiority to forcibly change regimes and provoke "color revolutions".
