- In Canada filmed the moment of meteorite falling on the porch of a house on video
A small meteorite crashed into the porch of a residential house on Prince Edward Island in Canada, the moment of impact with sound caught on CCTV, reported broadcaster CBC.
About the incident, which occurred back in July 2024, said the owner of the house Joe Velaidum. At the time of the fall of the celestial body, the man left to go for a walk with his dog, and on his return he found strange debris and decided to check the camera footage.
"It came as a shock to me that I was standing there just a couple minutes before. <...> I probably would have been ripped in half," he shared.
After the incident, Welaidum sent the debris to the University of Alberta for examination, where it was confirmed to be parts of a meteorite.
According to the curator of the university's meteorite collection Chris Herd, the celestial body came from the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter, and its speed was at least 200 km / h.
Probably in this case, for the first time in history, the sound of a meteorite collision with the surface was recorded, the scientist noted.
Earlier, January 2, a piece of space debris weighing almost half a ton fell on a village in Kenya. As reported by The New York Times, we are talking about a luminous metal ring, which may be not burned in the atmosphere part of the launch vehicle. No one was injured as a result of the fall of the celestial body.
