The lack of ice cover on Baikal is associated with disturbance and deep cyclonic formations. This was reported to "Izvestia" on January 12 by the scientific head of the Hydrometeorological Center Roman Vilfand.

According to Wilfand, very often carried air from the Atlantic Ocean. The expert called this phenomenon uncharacteristic for the regions of Siberia, since usually air masses from the Pacific and Atlantic oceans do not reach this territory.

"This year the disturbance occurred. <...> And cyclones, cyclonic formations are very deep. Deep cyclones means that the pressure in it is very low," Wilfand added.

According to him, ice on Baikal is usually formed completely by mid-winter. On January 12, the press service of the Baikal search and rescue team of the Ministry of Emergency Situations of the Russian Federation said that the situation on Baikal remained complicated. The agency added that ice formation in the south is not expected due to the warm winter. It is specified that there is ice in the north of the lake at a distance of 5 km from the shore. On the Small Sea, "in some places open water" exists on the lake shore, and the weather will not affect its formation, as "warm winters have already happened".
