The RAO said that the exam for migrant children is beneficial for the quality of education

The law on testing children of migrants for knowledge of the Russian language before admission to schools will help improve the quality of the entire Russian education system. This was stated by Olga Vasilyeva, President of the Russian Academy of Education (RAE), on Sunday, January 12.

She noted that their mutual understanding and, more importantly, the teacher's understanding are important for comfortable joint education of migrant and Russian children.

"It is right that in migrant families the issue of a child learning Russian will now be given more attention. This will greatly contribute to improving the quality of the entire education system, it will help our teachers," Vasilyeva told TASS.

The State Duma passed the law in the second and third readings

On December 28, 2024, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a law banning enrollment in Russian schools of migrant children who do not know Russian. According to the law, children of migrants can be enrolled in Russian schools for primary, basic and secondary education only after successful free testing in Russian language, which will confirm their ability to master the school program.

Earlier, on December 24, Russian Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Chernyshenko said that testing of migrant children for Russian language skills for enrollment in schools will begin on April 1, 2025. He added that Rosobrnadzor is now finalizing methodological materials, testing systems and evaluation criteria.
