Russia becomes Spain's second main gas supplier in 2024
Russia ranked second in terms of liquefied natural gas (LNG) supplies to Spain in the time period from January to November 2024. This is reported on the website of the Spanish energy company Enagás.
The country purchased the equivalent of 72,360 GWh of LNG (21.3% of the total) from Russia over the 12 months. As a result, Russia ranked second after Algeria in terms of imports of fuel supplies to Spain. According to the company, the United States is in third place.
In December 2024, Madrid ordered 5485 GW⋅h of gas from Moscow, which corresponds to 20.8% of the total.
Earlier, on November 15, 2024, Maxim Chirkov, associate professor at the Department of Economic Policy and Economic Measurements of the State University of Russia, explained to Izvestia that European countries are interested in Russian gas because it is cheaper than energy from other suppliers and its supply is more reliable. At the same time, the expert suggested that the import of pipeline gas from Russia will continue to grow.
Before that, on October 23, Bloomberg agency ruled out the possibility of the EU countries to reduce the supply of Russian gas. As noted by experts, the volume of its purchases in 2024 has only increased - from 15 to 20%, despite the previously announced plans of the European authorities in the future to abandon the Russian energy resource completely. The publication concludes that it is very difficult for European countries to reduce demand for Russian gas and this fact "undermines production activity in the region".
