The tradition of celebrating the old New Year originated in the XX century. After the October Revolution, the Bolsheviks who came to power decided to transfer the country from the Julian system of chronology to the Gregorian system. This was done for several reasons. First, the Gregorian calendar was more accurate, as it was based on more modern astronomical data. Secondly, it was used by almost all European countries. The difference between the two reference systems was 13 days, which made political and economic contacts with neighbors much more complicated.
The country officially switched to the Gregorian calendar in February 1918. However, the Orthodox Church continued to count by the Julian system. Ordinary citizens also did not immediately get used to the changes and for some time celebrated New Year's Eve on the old style - January 14 (January 1 on the Julian calendar). So the main winter holiday had a "double", which gradually became a separate celebration.
Today, the Old New Year is a kind of farewell to the New Year holidays. On this day, the last concerts are given, children's matinees are held, fireworks rumble. Russians who did not have time to make a wish on the night of January 1, do it at midnight on January 14, and in the evening invite relatives and friends for dinner.
