- The U.S. reported Musk's intention to make paid registration on the social network X
Registration in the American social network X (formerly Twitter), owned by businessman Ilon Musk, may soon become paid for new users. This is reported on January 9 by Fortune portal, citing its sources.
According to the media, the payment may be introduced as early as February: it is assumed that the creation of an account will cost $8 (about 818 rubles). Such a measure will apply to users around the world.
Those who do not want to make a contribution, will not be able to publish their posts or comment on others. They will be able to use the social network only in reading mode. As a bonus for paid registration subscribers are promised to give a monthly subscription X Premium, which separately costs $ 8 (it, in particular, removes advertising), adds "Gazeta.Ru". It is noted that Musk also wants to hide the date and time of publication of posts displayed in the feed. This will help to improve and clean up the interface of the social network.
Developers of the network believe that paid registration is necessary to combat fake accounts and bots. Since 2023, a similar measure has been tested in New Zealand and the Philippines, where users pay $1 a year from registration.
On New Year's Eve 2025, Musk renamed his social network X (formerly Twitter) profile to "Kekius Maximus" (Kekius Maximus). He also replaced his profile picture with Pepe the Frog, a well-known Internet meme character. Pepe the Frog on the avatar of the billionaire is dressed in a gladiator uniform and holding a game joystick.
Also on December 30, 2024, Lars Klingbeil, co-chairman of the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD), called on December 30 to limit the influence of X in Europe, because Musk, in his opinion, is trying to influence the elections in Germany through posts on this social network and an article in the newspaper Welt am Sonntag, supporting the party AdG ("Alternative for Germany").
