Six elephants arrived to the Great Moscow Circus on Friday, January 10, as a gift from Myanmar: five girls and one boy. All the animals are between three and four years old. During a month, the animals underwent comprehensive quarantine and veterinary examinations under the supervision of leading Russian and international experts.

"The decision was made to mark the 75th anniversary of the establishment of relations between our countries: Russia and Myanmar. This is already a good tradition, because before that three elephants were presented on the 70th anniversary. It is a beautiful tradition, which we will develop as far as possible," Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said.

The diplomat noted that the transfer of the elephants was a complicated process that took two years because of the large number of necessary documents. Options with different countries were considered, but everything worked out with Myanmar.

Earlier, on January 4, two Malay bear cubs - Luchik and Zvezdochka - were delivered to the Moscow Zoo. The animals arrived at the end of December and are now in quarantine in the playroom, where they are separated from each other by a grate for safety reasons.
