- Political analyst pointed out the impossibility of Zurabishvili's full-fledged work as "president"
The work of the so-called office of former Georgian President Salome Zurabishvili, who refused to accept the results of the presidential election, will be limited to meetings with her Western partners and social networking. Denis Denisov, an expert of the Financial University under the Government of the Russian Federation, shared this opinion with Izvestia on January 9.
Earlier in the day, Zurabishvili said during a briefing that she would work in the new office and continue to fulfill "the functions of the president" in it. She noted that the country is going through a deep crisis and repeated parliamentary elections should be held to get out of it.
"Well, they (Zurabishvili's supporters. - Ed.) will rent an office somewhere, hang a sign that the president is sitting here, and will receive those European guests who will visit them. They will make statements in the media, maintain their website, social networks. They can't [work] in any other way. This is, of course, nonsense," Denisov commented.
According to him, Zurabishvili has no tools and levers of influence left and all she can do is make "strange statements" that can hardly affect the political situation in Georgia. At the same time, the interlocutor of the publication noted that certain confrontation in Georgia continues, but the protest movement is on the decline. Thus, the expert believes, the situation in the country may stabilize.
"A number of politicians who would like to destabilize <...> in Georgia continue to advocate active manifestations, demonstrations, street protests, but the trends are such that they are decreasing. And there is a completely logical pattern in this: people simply do not see any results, and most importantly - the prospects of the results of their trips to the square," explained the political analyst.
The presidential election in Georgia was held on December 14, and the Georgian Dream candidate Mikhail Kavelashvili won. After that, Zurabishvili refused to leave her post and threatened to "overthrow the regime" if no compromise is reached on the issue of parliamentary elections, the results of which she also does not recognize.
Kavelashvili's inauguration ceremony as Georgia's new president took place on December 29. Zurabishvili, who did not recognize the election results, left the presidential residence and told supporters that she intended to take part in a protest on New Year's Day and visit a number of countries.
