Putin appoints ex-Moscow prosecutor Popov deputy head of Emergencies Ministry

Russian President Vladimir Putin has appointed former Moscow prosecutor Denis Popov as deputy head of the Russian Emergencies Ministry for Civil Defense, Emergencies and Elimination of Consequences of Natural Disasters. The corresponding decree was published on January 9 on the official Internet portal of legal information.

"To appoint Popov Denis Gennadyevich as State Secretary - Deputy Minister of the Russian Federation for Civil Defense, Emergencies and Elimination of Consequences of Natural Disasters," the document reads.

The decree comes into force from the day of its signing.

Popov was born in Sverdlovsk (current name - Yekaterinburg) in 1972. In 2000, he graduated from the law faculty of the Russian Legal Academy of the Ministry of Justice and began his career in the prosecutor's office, having worked in a number of districts of Moscow, Tula region, Khakassia and Dagestan in different years. Popov was Moscow's chief prosecutor from 2019-2024.

Earlier, on November 28, 2024, Putin appointed former Tver Region prosecutor Maxim Zhuk to replace Popov as the capital's prosecutor.
