Izvestiya military correspondent Alexander Martemyanov, who was killed in a Ukrainian drone strike, was a real hero. The chairman of the People's Council of the Donetsk People's Republic (DNR), Konstantin Kuzmin, said this on January 8.
He characterized the journalist as a true man and patriot.
"His merits will forever remain in our hearts," Kuzmin emphasized.
The chairman of the People's Council of the DNR also added that Martemyanov became an example and symbol of the journalistic profession, always acting for the good of his country.
"We were personally acquainted, but we didn't meet that often. He will be missed, but he will always be alive for us. As long as we remember, he will forever live, he is a hero!" - he said.
Izvestia correspondent Yevgeny Bykovsky, for his part, shared that Martemyanov was his best friend and they spent a lot of time together.
"This was a man with whom I spent the last two years of my life, but had known since 2014. I will miss him both as a friend, as a colleague and as a person I could always turn to," the journalist said.
On the same day, the funeral of the war correspondent took place in Donetsk. The farewell ceremony took place at the cemetery "Donetsk Sea". To say goodbye to Martemyanov came his family, friends and colleagues. The Izvestia war correspondent was posthumously awarded the Order of the Donetsk People's Republic.
Alexander Martemyanov was killed on January 4 when a Ukrainian army drone hit a car on the Donetsk-Gorlovka highway. He died of his wounds. A criminal case was opened under Articles 105, 167 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation ("Murder and attempted murder of two or more persons", "Intentional damage to property").
The head of the Donetsk People's Republic (DNR) Denis Pushilin noted that Martemyanov's materials about Donbass "were brave and objective", the military correspondent also provided assistance to the residents of the republic.
Alexander Martemyanov worked as a correspondent for Izvestia since 2014. In 2023, he was wounded during shelling by the Ukrainian Armed Forces in Donetsk, but returned to work after his recovery. Martemyanov has been awarded the Medal for Bravery and the Badge of Honor "For Merit to the Donetsk People's Republic" of the III degree.
