The deceased Izvestiya correspondent Alexander Martemyanov was a kind person and often helped citizens who suffered from shelling. A resident of Donetsk named Nikolai told Izvestiya on January 7.

The man has been living in the area of Donetsk airport for 10 years. He caught the first strikes on Donetsk and the suburbs by artillery and aviation in May 2014. For a long period, the neighborhood remained dangerous due to regular shelling by militants.

Nikolai shared that last spring a house caught fire on a neighboring property and it was Martemyanov who rushed to help put out the fire.

"The house was burning. He came with canisters to put out the fire here. It was a man of gold. Back in 2014 <...> concussed me here. He came, brought me something. No money, there was nothing. And constantly came to see me. Just a man was a kind soul," recalled a local resident.

Izvestia correspondent Alexander Martemyanov was killed on January 4 when a Ukrainian army drone hit his car on the Donetsk-Gorlovka highway. He died of his wounds. A criminal case was opened under Articles 105, 167 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation ("Murder and attempted murder of two or more persons", "Intentional damage to property").

Head of the Donetsk People's Republic (DNR) Denis Pushilin noted that Martemyanov's materials about Donbass "were brave and objective", the military correspondent also provided assistance to the residents of the republic. Viktor Petrenko, the chairman of the Russian Union of Journalists in the DNR, said that the deceased war correspondent should be buried in the Alley of Heroes in Donetsk.

Alexander Martemyanov worked as a correspondent for Izvestia since 2014. In 2023, he was wounded during shelling by the Armed Forces of Ukraine in Donetsk, but returned to work after his recovery. Martemyanov was awarded the medal "For Bravery" and the insignia "For Merit to the Donetsk People's Republic" III degree.
