In the next 25 years, about 40 million people may die as a result of developing antibiotic resistance. This was reported on January 5 by the newspaper The Guardian.

"About one million people die each year due to the spread of antimicrobial resistance, and this figure will grow over the next 25 years. It's really scary," former chief medical officer of England Sally Davis told the publication.

According to the newspaper, scientists have found that by 2050, deaths due to drug resistance may double and reach 40 million people. The elderly are at risk. As Davis noted, the death rate among people over 70 has increased by 80% since 1990.

To combat the emergence of resistance, doctors try to minimize the prescribing of antibiotics as much as possible.

In October, Konstantin Usov, Associate Professor of the Department of Therapy at the Medical Faculty of the State University of Education, told Izvestia that href="https://iz.ru/1778019/2024-10-21/biokhimik-sviazal-chastyi-priem-antibiotikov-s-poiavleniem-ustoichivykh-k-nim-mikrobov"> frequent use of antibiotics leads to the appearance of microbes resistant to them. According to him, people also start antibiotic treatment themselves without visiting a doctor or using drugs incorrectly, for example, they don't drink the course completely — they feel better and decide that enough is enough. In such cases, the risk of survival and emergence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria is much higher.
