Donetsk mayor expresses condolences over death of Izvestiya correspondent
On January 5, Donetsk Mayor Alexei Kulemzin expressed condolences over the death of Izvestia correspondent Alexander Martemyanov as a result of a Ukrainian Armed Forces (AFU) drone attack on a civilian car.
"His work became a symbol of courage and unwavering spirit. The memory of him will remain in our hearts forever," he wrote in his Telegram channel.
Kulemzin also noted that Martemyanov's life was dedicated to the search for truth.
Izvestia correspondent Alexander Martemyanov was killed on January 4 when a Ukrainian army drone hit a car on the Donetsk-Gorlovka highway. He died of his wounds.
As specified in the RF Ministry of Defense, the correspondents of "RIA Novosti" Maxim Romanenko and Mikhail Kevkhiev, editor of "Bloknot Donetsk" Svetlana Larina and military correspondent Isabella Liberman also received shrapnel wounds as a result of the AFU attack.
In his turn, Russian First Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN Dmitry Polyansky told Izvestia that the incident would be discussed during the nearest UN Security Council meeting on Ukraine.
Head of the Donetsk People's Republic (DNR) Denis Pushilin noted that Martemyanov's materials about Donbass "were brave and objective", and the journalist himself was always "on the front line".
Alexander Martemyanov worked as a correspondent for Izvestia since 2014. In 2023, he was wounded during shelling by the AFU in Donetsk, but returned to work after his recovery. Martemyanov was awarded the medal "For Bravery", the insignia "For Merit to the Donetsk People's Republic" III degree.
