Expert talks about the dangers of alcohol for dogs
Alcohol intoxication is a deadly condition for a dog. During the holiday season, dog owners should be especially careful when feasting. If a pet accidentally tastes alcohol, it can cause serious health problems. President of the Russian Cynological Federation Vladimir Golubev told Izvestia about the danger of alcohol for dogs.
"Alcohol is deadly for dogs. A banal situation in the form of spilled wine or cognac on the floor can cause poisoning of the pet if he licks the liquid out of curiosity. In this case, it is important to seek help from a veterinarian, because alcohol poisoning can cause the death of the pet," explained Golubev.
According to him, ethanol, which is contained in alcoholic beverages, is toxic to animals, in large quantities it can cause the death of a dog. Ethanol is quickly absorbed in the gastrointestinal tract of the pet and reaches the brain. A reaction to alcohol consumption in a dog can occur 40 minutes to an hour after ingesting the liquid.
In addition, alcohol in large quantities is capable of inducing a coma. The amount of lethal dose of ethanol depends on the pet's health and size. For dogs, it ranges from 5.5 grams to 7.9 grams per 1 kg of the dog's weight.
"It's not worth trying to induce vomiting, as this can only be effective if the pet drank alcohol 10-15 minutes ago and you noticed it immediately. The use of absorbents will also not help to alleviate the situation, so it is important for the owner to take the dog to a veterinary clinic for qualified assistance," - summarized Golubev.
Earlier, on December 17, Vladimir Golubev told "Izvestia" about how to provide first aid to a dog with frostbite of the paws. According to him, if a person notices the first signs of frostbite in a pet, it is necessary to act quickly and correctly. One should not rub the paws, try to warm them with a hair dryer or pour hot water on them.
