Every year on January 6, Orthodox Christians celebrate Christmas Eve, the day before the Nativity of Christ. Believers spend it in strict fasting and penance, preparing to celebrate one of the most important celebrations of the church calendar, and "after the first star" gather around the table with family and friends. Christmas Eve: new pictures and cards

Christmas Eve (Christmas Eve) is a special day on the eve of such holidays as Christmas and Epiphany (Epiphany). The word itself comes from the name of the traditional Lenten dish eaten on this day - sochiv. It is made of soaked grains, honey and dried fruits.

The Christian Church began to celebrate Christmas Eve in the IV century. Eventually it is connected with the arrival of the Virgin Mary and Joseph the Handmaiden to Bethlehem, where Christ was destined to be born the next day. During the V-VIII centuries the liturgical tradition of Christmas Eve was formed: texts and hymns were created, which are now heard in churches on the eve of Christmas.

On Christmas Eve, the faithful abstain from food until the evening liturgy, which concludes the 40-day Christmas fast. After that, they can gather around the table with family and friends to share the joy of the coming holiday. In Russia, strict fasting was observed until the appearance of the first star in the sky, which was associated with Bethlehem star.

It is believed that believers adopted this custom from the monks: on Christmas Eve in many monasteries there was a long service, during which it was impossible to be distracted by meals. Therefore, the first meal was taken in the evening, before the all-night vigil. The monks strengthened their strength with pre-prepared sotsiv.

In the folk tradition the celebration of Christmas Eve combined Orthodox and pagan elements. On this day housewives prepared a dinner of 12 dishes - according to the number of apostles. They started the meal with oozing, and then proceeded to the rest of the treats. It was believed that on Christmas Eve one should try everything on the table to attract health and prosperity into one's life.

Young people dressed up in wonderful costumes on Christmas Eve and went caroling. They went around the courtyards and sang songs glorifying the Virgin Mary and Christ. For this the owners treated them with pastries and sweets. Unmarried girls on the holiday fortune-telling, wishing to know what the groom would be like. Family people also did not refuse from fortune-telling, but their questions mainly concerned the economy and future harvest.
