Biden commuted the sentences of 37 Americans on death row
US President Joe Biden commuted the sentences of 37 citizens sentenced to death. This was reported on December 23 on the website of the White House.
It is specified that the sentences will be reclassified to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole.
The publication notes that the current head of state believes that the United States at the federal level should stop using the death penalty. The exception in this matter is called cases of terrorism and mass killings based on hatred.
"This historic act of clemency is based on the merits of the President in reforming criminal justice," - stated on the White House website.
It is noted that at this stage of the presidential term Biden issued more pardons than his predecessors.
Earlier, on December 12, it was reported that the US President commuted sentences for 1.5 thousand citizens and pardoned 39 prisoners, which is the largest number for the day among heads of state. He granted pardons to citizens who were positively affected by imprisonment and released those people who expressed a desire to make society safer.
