In late spring, Muslims around the world celebrate Eid al-Adha, the most important holiday in Islamic culture, ending the pilgrimage to Mecca. (hajj). In 2026, believers will greet him after sunset on May 26. Izvestia collected greetings and postcards for Muslims in different languages.

About the Eid al-Adha holiday

Eid al-Adha, or Eid al-Adha (Arabic. The "feast of sacrifice"), is celebrated on the tenth day of the month of Dhul-Hijjah — 70 days after Eid al-Adha, marking the end of fasting in Ramadan.

Preparations for the celebration begin long before it begins. At the beginning of the month of Dhul Hijjah, believers who have the opportunity and means go on hajj to Mecca. Those who stay at home devote this time to prayer, spiritual purification and good deeds.

The celebration of Eid al-Adha begins at dawn. Muslims perform a full ablution, put on clean clothes and go to the mosque for a festive prayer. After morning prayer and homily (khutbah), believers take part in a ritual sacrifice — the slaughter of a ram, sheep, goat, cow or camel.

The meat of the sacrificial animal is divided into three equal parts: a third is distributed to the needy and poor, a third to relatives and neighbors, and the rest is left for the family. Festive dishes are prepared from it: according to tradition, the richer and more diverse the table, the happier the year will be.
