Paying for goods and services using a QR code may be less profitable and convenient than paying with a bank card. This was announced on October 25 by Meri Valishvili, Associate Professor of the Department of State and Municipal Finance at Plekhanov Russian University of Economics.

According to her, the main feature is that the QR code payment is actually carried out as a money transfer, and not as a regular card purchase. Therefore, bonuses and cashback may not be charged for it, an additional commission is possible when using a credit card, and the operation may be included in the free transfer limit.

"All these disadvantages are especially important if the bank's client has a loyalty program in which a significant amount can be returned as cashback and if the client often transfers funds (for example, to relatives) and the free limit is important," she said in an interview with the Prime agency.

The expert called the dependence on the quality of the Internet connection the second disadvantage. To make a payment, you need to open a banking application, so if the connection is unstable, the transaction may not go through the first time, which can significantly increase the purchase time.

In addition, fraudsters use a QR phishing scheme, placing fake codes on top of the real ones at cash desks, terminals or in the menus of establishments. After scanning, the user can get to a malicious site. Valishvili recommended choosing a dynamic QR code whenever possible, which is generated directly at the payment terminal or cash register.

Kaspersky Lab reported on October 5 that the attackers began sending emails with QR codes on behalf of government agencies, trying to get money under the pretext of paying for postal services. It was clarified that the letters are sent to corporate email addresses. Senders report, for example, an alleged upcoming inspection, for which certain information must be provided.
