- An expert on drones assessed the restriction of access to Starlink for the Armed Forces of Ukraine
The restriction of access to Starlink for the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) has so far affected only a small part of drones. This was stated by Denis Fedutinov, an expert in the field of UAVs, editor-in-chief of the Unmanned Aviation magazine, in an interview with Izvestia.
"So far, we are talking about a cutoff speed of 160 km/h, which affects a small part of the devices. We'll see what happens next. If SpaceX expands the restrictions, it may well significantly affect the coordination of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, up to the collapse of defenses in certain sections of the line of contact," he said.
However, the expert did not rule out that these are just political games aimed at promoting certain contractual positions, as happened before.
Sergei Beskrestnov, adviser to the President of Ukraine Vladimir Zelensky on defense technologies, announced on October 14 that SpaceX, which developed the Starlink satellite system, had limited the speed of its terminals used by the Ukrainian military. It was clarified that the measures affected the Starshield package, whose services made it possible to monitor objects at speeds of 100 miles per hour (160.93 km/h).
Military expert Igor Nikulin allowed the APU to turn into "blind kittens" if the Starlink shutdown for devices at speeds above 160 km/h continues. He explained that for the Ukrainian army, these systems are the main element of defense against drones.
