Von der Leyen announced plans to allocate additional financing for drones to Ukraine
The European Union intends to allocate additional financing to Ukraine this week for the purchase of drones and missiles. This was announced on October 11 by the head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, following a telephone conversation with Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky.
"This week, the EU will provide additional funding for drones and missiles," she wrote on the social network X.
Von der Leyen did not specify the specific amount of the new tranche, the sources of financing and the timing of its provision. She also said that the situation in Ukraine will be one of the central topics of the upcoming EU summit on October 15-16. European leaders will discuss Kiev's financing needs for next year and the possibility of attracting additional international assistance.
The head of the European Commission added that Ukraine will be in the spotlight at the European Council meeting this week. According to her, the participants will discuss Kiev's financing needs for next year and ways to mobilize new global support.
According to information from the data of the Ukrainian Ministry of Finance and national agencies dated October 6, it became known that since the beginning of 2026, the Group of Seven countries have provided loans to Ukraine totaling $10.5 billion from proceeds from frozen assets of Russia, and the total amount of funds transferred to Kiev reached $49.4 billion.
The newspaper Les Échos reported on October 2 that members of the European Parliament had sent representatives of the European Commission (EC) an initiative to transfer frozen Russian assets in excess of €200 billion to Ukraine. The idea was supported in writing by 122 politicians. They expect that Russia's assets will be transferred from the Euroclear depository to some kind of mechanism that will be controlled by the EC.
