Former Puerto Rican boxing world champion Wilfredo Gomez has died at the age of 69. This was reported on October 11 by The Ring.
According to the newspaper, Gomez had been in the hospital for two weeks due to breathing problems. He did not live a few weeks before his 70th birthday, which was scheduled to take place on October 29.
Gomez became world champion in the second lightest and featherweight categories according to the World Boxing Council (WBC), as well as in the second featherweight category according to the World Boxing Association (WBA).
In 1977-1983, he defended the title in the second lightest category a record 17 times, ending all fights with a knockout. In 1995, Gomez was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame.
