AP called Trump's decision to purchase Russian diesel unexpected
The decision of US President Donald Trump to negotiate with Russian leader Vladimir Putin on the supply of diesel fuel was a sharp departure from Washington's previous line towards Moscow. The new move by the US administration looks particularly unexpected against the background of recent measures to increase sanctions pressure on Russia. This was reported by the Associated Press on October 10.
The AP noted that back in September, Trump signed a law providing for restrictions aimed at reducing Russian revenues from oil and gas exports. However, now the United States has agreed to receive Russian oil products. Such a change of course, according to the agency, is sharply at odds with the previous actions of the American authorities.
Washington's change in approach raises questions about the future strategy of the United States towards Moscow against the background of the conflict in Ukraine. According to AP, the agreement may complicate plans to expand economic restrictions against Russia and indicates the willingness of the American administration to review previous decisions in the energy sector.
At the same time, the agreement is also important for US domestic policy. Against the backdrop of rising fuel prices and the approaching midterm congressional elections, the Trump administration is interested in measures that can increase the supply of energy resources and reduce the costs of American consumers.
On October 9, Trump announced that during a conversation with Putin, it was agreed that Russia would supply more than 300,000 tons of diesel fuel to the American and global markets, another 500,000 tons during November and 1 million tons immediately after that. The American leader also claims that within a "short period of time" Russia will be able to export an additional 3 million tons of diesel fuel. The American leader expressed confidence that the agreements reached would help significantly reduce the cost of fuel not only in the United States, but also around the world.
