You can dream of working for a large company for several years, successfully complete an interview, and regret your decision within a month. This often happens because when choosing an employer, a person is guided by the prestige of the position and prospects, but knows almost nothing about what he has to do every day. Daria Kudryavtseva, HR Director of the IT outsourcing company Selecty, told Izvestia on October 12 about whether it makes sense to look for a dream job.

"It makes sense to look for a dream job, but the very idea of it should be reconsidered. People often evaluate a profession based on the most attractive part: a journalist wants to write interesting materials, a leader wants to make important decisions, and an entrepreneur wants to develop his own product. At the same time, coordination, conflicts and daily duties, which can take up most of the working time, fall out of sight," she shared.

According to her, as a result, disappointment comes even when a person gets exactly the position they were aiming for. Therefore, before changing a profession or company, the specialist recommended to figure out which aspects of the work are of interest, and which ones will just have to be accepted.

Kudryavtseva called talking to people who already work in the field of interest one of the ways to test their own expectations. At the same time, she advised choosing specialists from several companies, since the conditions of employers can vary greatly, as well as the impressions of employees.

"It's important to ask them not only about interesting projects and career opportunities, but also about what takes up the most time, annoys them, and makes them stay late after work," the HR director emphasized.

The specialist also called for trying the profession in practice. According to Kudryavtseva, an internship, a small project, or the opportunity to spend a day working with a specialist sometimes provide more insight than a few months of job research. She noted that a potential candidate might like the idea of managing a team until he is faced with the need to regularly sort out other people's mistakes and be responsible for other people's results.

Kudryavtseva also recommends that you be careful about the results of career guidance tests. The HR director noted that they usually determine aptitudes and suitable types of activities, but are not able to choose a specific profession for a person. At the same time, the same abilities can be useful in completely different fields. Thus, the ability to organize people, speak publicly, and work with information is in demand both in education and in IT project management.

"When choosing an employer, it is worth checking to what extent the promises at the interview correspond to the actual job. If a company offers career development, it is useful to find out which employees have recently been promoted and what results were required for this. If we are talking about training, it should be clarified who will help the newcomer and whether time is provided for this," the expert added.

In addition, the specialist emphasized the importance of identifying conditions that a person is not ready to give up even for the sake of an attractive position. She noted that for some it may be a predictable schedule, for another it may be independence in decision-making. At the same time, according to Kudryavtseva, it is possible to agree to a salary reduction or increased workload for the sake of prospects, if you understand in advance what justifies such a compromise.

At the same time, according to the HR director, ideas about good work change naturally: at the beginning of a career, a person may strive for difficult tasks and rapid advancement, and after a few years begin to appreciate stability and the opportunity to spend evenings with family more. Therefore, according to her, a dream job may well exist, but not necessarily as the only profession or company that needs to be found once and for all.

On October 1, Andrey Boyko, head of the Selecty recruitment team, told Izvestia how to correctly explain a long break in work. He drew attention to the fact that there may be a large number of reasons for a career break, and a significant part may have good reasons. According to the expert, the most important thing is to present a pause in your career correctly.
