The endocrinologist named the main risks of extreme diets
Extreme diets aimed at achieving excessive leanness lead to a surge in cases of functional hypothalamic amenorrhea. This was stated by endocrinologist and nutritionist Ekaterina Sakhnova in an interview with Izvestia, adding that in this condition, the body of a woman of reproductive age shuts down the function of childbirth due to energy deficiency.
"A critical loss of adipose tissue leads to a drop in the level of the hormone leptin, which sends a signal to the brain about a threat to survival. In response, the hypothalamus blocks the production of hormones responsible for ovulation. Pregnancy with such a deficiency is considered an unacceptable luxury by the body," the source said.
She also noted that in most cases the cycle is reversible, but for women who dieted in adolescence, the risk of infertility is much higher.
"In addition, in conditions of starvation and the absence of a menstrual cycle, girls lack the necessary bone density, which leads to early osteoporosis and the risk of fractures from minimal exertion," the doctor explained.
