Alexei Zhuravlev, first deputy chairman of the State Duma's defense committee, said that cooperation with Russia could be more beneficial for the European Union (EU) than confrontation, but Brussels is not ready to change course, as this would mean admitting its own strategic mistakes.

He also noted that cooperation is hindered by the structures of the European Union, which, in his opinion, benefit from the conflict. According to him, there have been calls for cooperation with Russia before, mainly from Hungary and Slovakia, which depend on Russian energy supplies.

"But this did not stop Germany when it was escalating, having lost the advantages of the once-strongest EU economy. Now backing down is the same as admitting your own strategic mistakes, so European countries will not stop helping Ukraine at the same time," the deputy explained in an interview with Lenta.Ru on Wednesday, September 30th.

Zhuravlev noted that the policy of European countries is influenced by the EU structures, which have the decisive right to vote and, in his opinion, receive the greatest benefit from the Ukrainian conflict together with the military-industrial complex. The parliamentarian believes that a sign of a change in Europe's attitude towards Russia may be the change of current European officials to those more loyal to Moscow.

Political analyst Spartak Baranovsky said on September 23 that after the abandonment of Russian oil, the EU became more dependent on suppliers and sea routes, RIAMO notes.

At the same time, the Permanent Mission of Russia to the European Union reported that unfriendly actions against the Russian Federation would not go unanswered. The Russian permanent mission called the restrictive measures of the EU illegitimate and unjustified, stating that their purpose is to harm Russia.

Prior to that, in September, Dmitry Medvedev, Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council, said that Russia had always assumed that it had nothing to share with European countries and remained open to economic cooperation. In his opinion, the current EU authorities are using the topic of the "Russian threat" to explain to the population the multibillion-dollar costs to Ukraine. Life.ru .
