A warning has been issued in the UK about an impending power shortage.

The British national grid operator warned that on Monday evening, September 28, there may be a shortage of electricity, Bloomberg reports. According to the report, there may be a power shortage of 1.4 GW, which may begin at 16:00 (18:00 Moscow time).

"This is a planned and preventive measure. <...> There is no risk to the electricity supply to consumers, and the UK electricity system remains safe," the operator said on social media.

The warning allows the grid operator to request any additional generating capacity available.

The operator also requested additional capacity from neighboring countries and asked British energy suppliers if there were any ways to reduce demand. British suppliers regularly urge customers to reduce consumption in exchange for some kind of compensation, such as a discount on energy bills.

The new British Prime Minister, Andy Burnham, earlier announced the abolition of a 5% tax on electricity bills from October 1 as part of measures to reduce the cost of living. However, this benefit does not apply to the gas part of the payment, which is also included in the price limit of Ofgem, the state regulator of the gas and electricity market in the UK.

On August 6, a power outage in Manchester led to widespread train delays in the UK. According to the National Railway Network of Great Britain, train traffic on a significant part of the infrastructure was limited due to the impossibility of safe operation of trains after power outages.
