Cod stocks in the Northern Basin are recovering

Scientists have noticed a significant improvement in the situation with cod stocks in the Northern Basin. There is reason to believe that cod is restoring the spawning stock.

According to "Bi-port" news agency with reference to Rosrybolovstvo, the changes were recorded after the ongoing decrease in reserves of this important marine biological resource since 2015.

Scientists are confident that the reason for the decline was the small number of new generations of cod. However, now a stronger generation of 2021 is entering the commercial stock. The stabilization of the stock was also confirmed by Konstantin Sokolov, head of VNIRO's Polar Branch at the IX International Fisheries Forum.

If scientific recommendations are followed, the spawning stock will be replenished by another 22% in 2028. And by the end of the decade, the total quota of Russia and Norway can be raised to 400 thousand tons, scientists do not exclude.

However, we are not talking about a return to previous fishing volumes. There are only the first signs of improvement in the fishing situation, which must be preserved.

A joint Russian-Norwegian group of scientists recommended next year to allow the extraction of about 312.7 thousand tons in the Barents Sea, and this year the total allowable catch of cod in the Northern Basin was 285 thousand tons.
