Ukraine completely stopped exporting pig iron in August.

In August, Ukraine completely stopped exporting commercial pig iron. This was announced on September 21 by the Ukrainian consulting service GMK Center, citing data from the national State Customs Service.

In January — August, Ukrainian metallurgical enterprises supplied about 1.03 million tons of pig iron abroad, which is 16.4% less than in the same period last year.

The main export destination remained the United States, where 900.6 thousand tons of products were shipped. Shipments to this country decreased by 11% year-on-year. Ukraine exported 83.2 thousand tons of pig iron to Turkey, an increase of 88%, and 26.5 thousand tons to Italy, which is 77% less than last year.

Revenue from pig iron exports for eight months amounted to $413 million, a decrease of about 15% compared to last year. In 2025, Ukraine exported 1.98 million tons of pig iron worth $759.9 million.

GMK Center analysts believe that a prolonged stoppage of sea shipments may lead to a decrease in the positions of Ukrainian exporters in foreign markets.

On September 19, the head of the Federation of Metallurgists of the country, Sergei Belenky, said that steel production in Ukraine could decrease by about four times relative to the level that was recorded in the country before the conflict.
