The MP spent about 13 hours locked in a toilet in the parliament building in Brussels.

Frederic Ehrens, a member of parliament in the Belgian region of Flanders from the "Flemish Interest" party, was locked up overnight in the toilet of the Flemish parliament in Brussels, the VRT TV channel reports.

"Part of the [lock] broke, and I couldn't get out. Most of my colleagues had left shortly before, and I was alone in the building," Ehrens said.

The article clarified that he did not have a phone with him that night.

"I left my mobile phone on the table. I realized that it was very stupid. It was the first time I hadn't brought my phone with me, and it was at that moment that I needed it," the deputy said.

It wasn't until the next day at six in the morning that the cleaner was able to free him.

Ehrens was sent to the hospital for an examination because he had been feeling a lack of oxygen for a long time.

"I made several holes in the door so that at least some oxygen could flow in," Ehrens said.

The parliament said that this was an "unfortunate combination of circumstances."
